Lieutenant commander, U.S. Navy

Abraham DeSomer was an enlisted sailor who later rose to the rank of lieutenant commander in the United States Navy. He distinguished himself during the American intervention at Veracruz, Mexico, in April 1914 while serving aboard the USS Utah. For his extraordinary heroism, coolness, and skill under fire, he was awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
