Abram Pye Haring was born on 15 November 1840 in New York City, according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. At the age of 21 he enrolled at Brooklyn on 26 August 1862 for three years' service in the Union Army. He entered Company C, 132nd New York Infantry, and became the regiment's sergeant major. He was promoted to second lieutenant in January 1863 and mustered as first lieutenant of Company G that March. [1,2]
On 1 February 1864, Haring commanded a small picket detachment at Bachelor's Creek, North Carolina. His Medal of Honor citation reads: “With a command of 11 men, on picket, resisted the attack of an overwhelming force of the enemy.” The medal was issued on 28 June 1890. [1]
Haring continued serving until he was wounded at Kinston, North Carolina, on 8 March 1865. He was discharged because of his wounds on 15 May. Among his surviving papers is a notebook in which he wrote messages after suffering a jaw wound, an unusually personal record of his recovery. The collection also includes his 1903 account of the fighting near New Bern. [2]
After the war Haring worked in the stationery trade and lived in Montclair, New Jersey; an 1892 directory lists him as a stationer. He died at Montclair on 22 February 1915, aged 74, and was buried in Canterbury Presbyterian Cemetery at Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, New York. [1,3]
