Alaric B. Chapin

Chapin, a Union officer whose fearless leadership at Gettysburg earned him the Medal of Honor and secured his place among America's military heroes.

Born on 25 January 1840 in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Alaric B. Chapin answered the nation's call during the American Civil War by joining the 142nd New York Infantry. Rising to the rank of Captain, he became known for his leadership, determination, and unwavering commitment to his men during one of the most challenging periods in American history.

Chapin's defining moment came on 1 July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the Civil War's most decisive engagements. As Union forces fought to hold their positions against determined Confederate attacks, he displayed extraordinary courage while leading his company under intense enemy fire. Refusing to abandon his post despite overwhelming danger, Chapin's calm leadership and conspicuous gallantry inspired those around him and contributed to the Union's determined defence during the opening day of the battle. For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, with the award officially recognising his exceptional bravery at Gettysburg.

Although the Medal of Honor was the only verified wearable military decoration awarded to Alaric B.
