Alexander Aberdeen Forman was born on January 14, 1843, in Scipio Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan. He was living in Jonesville when he joined the Union Army during the American Civil War. The published transcription of the 7th Michigan Infantry's roster records his enlistment as a corporal in Company C on June 19, 1861, and his muster into service on August 22.
At Fair Oaks, also known as Seven Pines, Virginia, on May 31, 1862, Forman continued fighting despite being wounded. His Medal of Honor citation reads: ‘Although wounded, he continued fighting until, fainting from loss of blood, he was carried off the field.’ The regimental roster records his discharge for disability at Detroit on November 10, 1862.
Forman received the Medal of Honor on August 17, 1895, more than three decades after the battle. Reliable details of his civilian occupation and family life have not yet been established for this biography.
He died on March 3, 1922. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society identifies his place of death as Rockville Centre, New York, although some secondary accounts give Brooklyn. He is buried in the private Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, rather than the nearby national cemetery.
