Alexander Calvin Elliott was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1831. He entered the Union Army in August 1861 and served in the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry. The published Company I roster lists him as Alexander C. Elliott and records that he was wounded in June 1864. By the closing campaign of the war he was a sergeant in Company A.
On April 5, 1865, at Paine's Crossroads, Virginia, Elliott captured a Confederate flag. His official Medal of Honor citation is brief: ‘Capture of flag.’ The award was issued on May 3, 1865. The Company I roster records his muster-out as a sergeant of Company A on June 20, 1865, a date also given in an 1889 account of his service.
After the war, Elliott remained involved with fellow veterans. Hardesty's 1889 Military History of Ohio includes him among the veterans of Mahoning County and identifies him as a member and former adjutant of Hawkins Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. Further details of his civilian occupation and family require verification.
Elliott died on February 9, 1905, at Emsworth, Pennsylvania, according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. He was buried in Highwood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, in section 5, lot 229.
