Colonel, British Army
Alexander Roberts Dunn was a Canadian officer who served with the British Army during the Crimean War, where he achieved the distinction of becoming the first Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross. His gallantry occurred during the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava, where he saved the lives of two of his fellow soldiers.
Following his heroic actions in the Crimea, Dunn retired briefly from active service but returned to assist in raising the 100th (Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot in Canada for the British Army. He went on to become the first Canadian to command a British Army regiment when he assumed command of the 33rd Regiment of Foot.
Colonel Dunn met an untimely death at the age of 34 during a hunting accident in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) while serving with his regiment. He remains a highly celebrated figure in Canadian and British military history.
