Colonel Brevet Major General (USA) Major General (Pennsylvania National Guard), U.S. Army
Alfred Lawrence Pearson was a prominent American lawyer and a Union Army officer during the American Civil War. He entered the service with the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry and rose through the ranks due to his leadership and bravery on the battlefield. His dedicated service eventually earned him brevet promotions to Brigadier General and Major General in the Volunteer Army.
He is best known for his heroic actions on March 29, 1865, at the Battle of Lewis's Farm in Virginia. During this critical engagement, Pearson advanced under heavy fire, seized a critical point of the enemy's line, and rallied his men, which turned the tide of the battle. For his conspicuous gallantry on this occasion, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration.
Following the Civil War, Pearson returned to the practice of law and continued his military service in the Pennsylvania National Guard, eventually achieving the rank of Major General. He remained an active and influential figure in post-war veteran organizations and civic affairs in Pennsylvania until his death.
