Andrew Frederick Weatherby (Anthony) Beauchamp-Proctor was a highly decorated South African aviator who served during the First World War. He is remembered as South Africa's leading fighter ace of the conflict, officially credited with 54 aerial victories. His exceptional skill and bravery in the air made him one of the most successful balloon busters and fighter pilots of the war.
Beauchamp-Proctor's remarkable combat record earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. In addition to this supreme honor, he was awarded several other high-level decorations for valor and leadership in combat, including the Distinguished Service Order, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Military Cross with a bar indicating a second award.
