The fighting at Columbus, Georgia, came after Lee had surrendered in Virginia, but the war had not ended everywhere. Private Andrew W. Tibbets captured both the flag and its bearer from Austin's Confederate battery.
Andrew W. Tibbets was born 1830 in Clark County, Indiana. During the period relevant to his Medal of Honor, he served as Private with Company I, 3rd Iowa Cavalry.
On April 16, 1865, at Columbus, Georgia, he performed the action that led to the award. The surviving record fixes the core event clearly and allows the account to be told without adding unsupported detail.
