On September 20, 1863, at Chickamauga, Georgia, he performed the action that led to the award. The surviving record fixes the core event clearly and allows the account to be told without adding unsupported detail.
Medal of Honor Citation
Held out to the last with a small force against the advance of superior enemy numbers.
The Medal of Honor was presented December 4, 1893. His highest recorded rank was Captain. He died May 21, 1894, in Philadelphia. He was buried in St. James the Less Church Cemetery in Philadelphia.
His record is strongest when kept close to the documented action: the unit, place, date, and conduct for which the Medal of Honor was awarded.
