Private, U.S. Army
Archibald Hamilton Rowand Jr. was a United States soldier who fought with the Union Army as a member of Company K, 1st West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War. He served with distinction as a scout, performing highly dangerous reconnaissance and courier missions behind enemy lines.
Rowand was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during the winter of 1864–1865, specifically for carrying highly important dispatches through enemy territory under hazardous conditions. The Medal of Honor was officially conferred upon him on March 3, 1873.
Following his military service, Rowand returned to civilian life, but his actions during the Civil War remained a significant part of his legacy, representing the bravery of the volunteer cavalrymen of the Union.
