Blanquet

An Apache scout won recognition during Arizona canyon fights

Blanquet served as an Apache scout with the United States Army during General George Crook's Arizona campaigns in the winter of 1872–1873. Scouts supplied local knowledge of trails, water and terrain, and took part in fighting alongside Army troops.

Crook recommended Blanquet and other scouts for recognition after the Tonto Basin campaign. His recommendation identified Blanquet among the White Mountain Apache scouts who distinguished themselves in a charge at Sycamore Canyon, where a captured herd of horses was recovered. That episode gives a specific setting to the broader campaign service recorded in his Medal of Honor citation.

The Army issued Blanquet's Medal of Honor on 12 April 1875. His recognition forms part of the history of Native American scouts whose knowledge and combat service were important to United States Army operations in Arizona.
