Captain Charles Gilbert Gould was among the first men over the Confederate works at Petersburg. He was bayoneted in the face, struck with clubbed muskets, and still refused to give ground.
Charles Gilbert Gould was born May 5, 1845, in Windham County, Vermont. During the Civil War he served as Captain in Company H, 5th Vermont Infantry. He later attained the rank of Brevet Major.
On April 2, 1865, at Petersburg, Virginia, gould killed the man who had bayoneted him and remained in the fight despite his wounds. His conduct in the final assault on Petersburg brought the Medal of Honor.

Among the first over the works, he was bayoneted and clubbed but held his ground and killed the man who had bayoneted him.
He died December 5, 1916, at Cavendish, Vermont. He was buried in Windham Central Cemetery in Vermont.
