Charles Heaphy was an English-born New Zealand explorer, artist, and soldier who became the first member of the New Zealand armed forces to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Born in England, he migrated to New Zealand where he became a prominent surveyor and draftsman, capturing invaluable watercolor paintings and sketches of early colonial settler life.
During the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, Heaphy served with the colonial militia. His notable actions occurred during the invasion of Waikato, where he demonstrated exceptional gallantry in assistng wounded soldiers under heavy fire, which ultimately led to his recommendation for the British Empire's highest military decoration for valor.
Beyond his military service, Heaphy had a distinguished career as a public servant, surveyor, and politician, serving in the New Zealand Parliament.
