Sergeant Charles D. Marquette's Medal of Honor citation is only three words long, but its history is unusually complicated: later official publications accidentally substituted a different version.
Charles D. Marquette was born on February 9, 1845, in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. During the service relevant to this record, he served as Sergeant with Company F, 93d Pennsylvania Infantry.
On April 2, 1865, at Petersburg, Virginia, The Congressional Medal of Honor Society has restored the historic citation supported by earlier rolls and Marquette's original recommendation. His action was the capture of an enemy flag during the final assault at Petersburg.
