Colonel, U.S. Army
Charles Albert Varnum was a career United States Army officer. He is most noted for his service as the commander of the scouts for George Armstrong Custer during the Little Bighorn Campaign of the Great Sioux War. His leadership during these campaigns made him a prominent figure in the history of the American Indian Wars.
In addition to his service at the Little Bighorn, Varnum distinguished himself during the Drexel Mission fight, which occurred immediately following the Wounded Knee Massacre. For his conspicuous gallantry in this action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration.
Over his long and distinguished military career, Varnum rose to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. His legacy remains tied to the expansion of the American West and the notable cavalry engagements of the late 19th century.
