Clive Robertson Caldwell was the leading Australian air ace of World War II. He is officially credited with shooting down 28.5 enemy aircraft in over 300 operational sorties, including achieving the status of "ace in a day". Throughout his distinguished combat career, he was also ascribed six probable victories and 15 damaged enemy aircraft.
Serving with the Royal Australian Air Force, Caldwell operated in multiple theatres of the war, including the Middle East and the Pacific. He rose to the rank of Group Captain and became one of the most famous and highly decorated pilots in Australian military history.
His exceptional leadership and combat skills earned him numerous prestigious decorations from both Great Britain and allied nations, including the Distinguished Service Order, the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, and the Polish Cross of Valour. He survived the war as a highly respected national hero.
