On the day Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Corporal Daniel B. Moore risked his life at Fort Blakely to save an officer who had been shot down and overpowered.
Moore served in Company E, 11th Wisconsin Infantry and later received the brevet rank of captain.
On April 9, 1865, at Fort Blakely, Alabama, during the assault at Fort Blakely on April 9, 1865, Moore went to the aid of a fallen officer despite superior enemy numbers. His rescue earned the Medal of Honor.

Moore received the Medal of Honor in 1900. He died in 1914 and was buried in Graceland Cemetery in Mineral Point.
