Flight lieutenant, Royal Air Force
Flight Lieutenant David Samuel Anthony Lord was a transport pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Known for his exceptional bravery and self-sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On September 19, 1944, during the Battle of Arnhem, Lord was piloting a Douglas Dakota on a vital resupply mission for British paratroopers trapped below. Despite his aircraft being severely damaged and set on fire by intense anti-aircraft fire, Lord refused to abandon the mission, choosing instead to complete the drops and ensure his cargo reached the troops. His dedication and courage under fire epitomized the finest traditions of the Royal Air Force.
Following his actions at Arnhem, Flight Lieutenant Lord was posthumously honored with the Victoria Cross. His distinguished flying career also earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Mention in Despatches, securing his legacy as one of the most heroic transport pilots of World War II.
