Captain, U.S. Army
Captain Dayton P. Clarke was an American soldier who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is remembered for his conspicuous bravery during one of the war's most intense conflicts, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia.
On 12 May 1864, during the height of the battle, Clarke performed the actions that would later earn him the nation's highest military decoration. For his gallantry in combat, he was officially honored with the Medal of Honor decades later on 30 June 1892.
