Private First Class, U.S. Army
Private First Class Demensio Rivera was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. Serving as an infantryman, he distinguished himself through acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. For his extraordinary heroism during the conflict, he was initially awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, which was later upgraded decades after his death.
In March 2014, President Barack Obama officially upgraded Rivera's Distinguished Service Cross to the Medal of Honor in a ceremony at the White House. This correction of military records was the result of a Congressionally mandated review of Jewish American and Hispanic American veterans who may have been bypassed for the nation's highest military award due to prejudice.
Rivera's legacy is defined by his supreme sacrifice and courage under fire in Korea. Alongside the Medal of Honor, his service was recognized with several prominent combat and campaign decorations, highlighting his dedication to his country and his fellow soldiers.
