Sergeant, U.S. Army
Denis Byrne was an Irish-born soldier in the United States Army who served as a Sergeant with the 5th U.S. Infantry during the Indian Wars of the late 19th century.
He distinguished himself during General Nelson A. Miles' winter campaign against the Sioux Indians in the Montana Territory, which took place between October 1876 and January 1877. For his gallantry in action during this arduous winter campaign, Byrne was recognized as one of the 31 soldiers to receive the nation's highest military decoration.
Byrne's actions during the Indian Wars remain a testament to the fortitude and bravery of the frontier soldiers who served in the American West during the late 1800s.
