Donald James Matthew Blakeslee

Donald James Matthew Blakeslee was a legendary American pilot and officer whose extraordinary aviation career spanned the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons, and the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Renowned for his exceptional combat endurance and leadership, Blakeslee flew more combat missions against the German Luftwaffe than any other American fighter pilot. By the end of the conflict, he was officially credited with 15.5 aerial victories, cementing his status as a premier flying ace.

Blakeslee served as the commander of the famed 4th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force. Under his guidance, the unit transitioned to the P-51 Mustang and achieved historic milestones, including the first shuttle escort mission from England to Russia and back via Italy. During this grueling mission, Blakeslee and his unit successfully protected the heavy bombers against formidable enemy fighter opposition without a single bomber lost under their direct escort.

Following World War II, Blakeslee continued his military career in the newly formed United States Air Force, serving in both the occupation of Europe and the Korean War. For his gallantry in action, exceptional leadership, and extensive combat service, he was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, alongside numerous other high-ranking American and foreign military decorations, before retiring at the rank of Colonel.
