Edmond Thomas Butler

Edmond Thomas Butler served in the United States Army during the post–Civil War era and became a Medal of Honor recipient for distinguished gallantry during the Indian Wars. At the time of the action for which he received the Medal of Honor, Butler was serving as a Captain in the 5th U.S. Infantry. He later rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, which is his highest verified military rank. Butler’s military career placed him in the regular United States Army during a period when federal troops were heavily engaged across the western territories. In the decades after the Civil War, the Army operated from a network of forts and field posts while escorting settlers and supply trains, protecting transportation routes, and conducting campaigns against Native American groups resisting federal expansion. One of the major conflicts of this period involved the Northern Plains and the continuing struggle between the United States Army and Native American forces. Edmond Butler’s Medal of Honor action took place on January 8, 1877, at Wolf Mountain in Montana. The engagement came during the final phase of the Great Sioux War of 1876–1877. By this time, the United States Army was continuing winter operations against Native American forces after the dramatic events of the previous year. Winter campaigning presented severe difficulties. Soldiers had to operate in bitter cold, deep snow, difficult terrain, and long distances from established supply bases. These conditions placed enormous physical demands on officers and enlisted men even before combat began. At Wolf Mountain, Butler was serving as a Captain in the 5th U.S. Infantry. During the engagement, he distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry in action. His official Medal of Honor recognition was based on his conduct under combat conditions against hostile Native American forces. The surviving citation is concise, describing his action as most distinguished gallantry in action. Although the wording is brief, the award itself shows that Butler’s conduct was judged to be exceptional by the standards of the United States Army. The Battle of Wolf Mountain was part of the Army’s continuing effort to force remaining Native American groups onto reservations and end organized resistance on the northern plains. The fighting took place in harsh winter conditions and required troops to maintain discipline and cohesion under difficult circumstances. Butler’s role as an infantry officer placed him in a position of direct responsibility for the soldiers under his command. A Captain in the regular Army was expected not only to fight personally but also to control the movement of troops, maintain order, direct fire, and keep his men functioning under pressure. Butler’s gallantry therefore reflected both personal courage and leadership. His conduct at Wolf Mountain later became the defining heroic action of his military career. For this service, Edmond Thomas Butler was awarded the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor was the highest military decoration of the United States. By the late nineteenth century, it had become the principal federal recognition for extraordinary gallantry in military service. Butler’s Medal of Honor was officially issued on November 27, 1894. A later presentation date of January 3, 1895, is also associated with the award record. Both dates fall within the same historical Medal of Honor design period. For the final database profile, the correct version is therefore Medal of Honor 1862–1895 Army. No verified clasp, bar, star, oak leaf cluster, or other device is associated with Butler’s Medal of Honor. His final verified medal rack should therefore display the Medal of Honor alone. The long interval between the Wolf Mountain action in 1877 and the formal award in 1894 was not unusual for nineteenth-century Medal of Honor cases. Some soldiers and officers were recognized years after the original action as military records and recommendations were reviewed. In Butler’s case, his gallantry was formally recognized more than seventeen years after the battle. His rank history also requires a clear distinction. At the time of the Medal of Honor action, Butler was a Captain. Later in his military career, he reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. For the final hero profile, Rank at Heroic Action should therefore be recorded as Captain, while Highest Rank should be recorded as Lieutenant Colonel. This distinction is important because it preserves the actual chronology of his service. His Medal of Honor belongs to the action he performed as a Captain, not to the higher rank he reached later. Butler’s combat classification is also clear. He served in the United States Army with the 5th U.S. Infantry and performed his Medal of Honor action during direct ground combat. The appropriate metadata classification is therefore Army and Ground combat, with Infantry as the Combat Achievement Modifier. Other campaign medals sometimes associated with soldiers who served during this period should not be added to Butler’s final verified rack. The Indian Campaign Medal was created after his death. Likewise, the Civil War Campaign Medal was established later and should not be added simply because of earlier qualifying service. Under the project’s evidence standard, campaign participation and general eligibility do not establish personal entitlement. Recipient-specific evidence is required. For Butler, the Medal of Honor is the only decoration securely verified for the final published rack. His final verified medal count therefore remains one. That decoration is the Medal of Honor 1862–1895 Army, awarded in 1894. Butler’s later career demonstrated that his service continued well beyond the Wolf Mountain action. He eventually rose from Captain to Lieutenant Colonel. This advancement reflected a long career in the regular Army and placed him among experienced professional officers of the late nineteenth century. His highest verified rank should therefore remain Lieutenant Colonel in the final database. Edmond Thomas Butler died on August 21, 1895. His death came less than a year after the formal issue of his Medal of Honor. By that time, his military career had already been permanently associated with the gallantry he displayed at Wolf Mountain. For his final hero profile, the essential facts are clear. Edmond Thomas Butler served in the United States Army. His rank at the time of his Medal of Honor action was Captain. His highest verified rank was Lieutenant Colonel. He served with the 5th U.S. Infantry. His heroic action took place at Wolf Mountain, Montana, on January 8, 1877. His conduct was officially recognized for most distinguished gallantry in action. His Medal of Honor was issued on November 27, 1894, with a later presentation date recorded in January 1895. The correct final decoration is Medal of Honor 1862–1895 Army, with no verified device or clasp. His combat classification is Infantry. No Indian Campaign Medal or Civil War Campaign Medal should be included in his final verified rack. Edmond Thomas Butler is therefore remembered as a professional United States Army officer whose courage and leadership during the difficult winter fighting at Wolf Mountain earned him the Medal of Honor and secured his place among the recognized heroes of the American frontier era.
