Quarter Gunner, U.S. Navy
Edmund Haffee was a sailor in the United States Navy who served during the American Civil War. He held the rank of Quarter Gunner and distinguished himself during the final months of the conflict, particularly in the major amphibious assault on Fort Fisher, North Carolina.
On January 15, 1865, during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher, Haffee exhibited outstanding bravery and devotion to duty. His actions during the intense engagement earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
Haffee's legacy remains tied to this crucial Union victory, which successfully closed the last major port open to the Confederacy and helped hasten the end of the Civil War.
