He fought with Fourth Cavalry at the Red River in September.
Edward Branagan earned the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Red River in Texas on 29 September 1872. A private in Company F, 4th United States Cavalry, he served during the Army's Indian Campaigns.
The action formed part of an attack on a Comanche village on the North Fork of the Red River; women and children were among those taken prisoner. Branagan was born in 1846. His Medal of Honor was accredited to New York.
The official citation recognizes his conduct in the Red River action with the words “Gallantry in action.” The Medal of Honor was awarded on 19 November 1872, less than two months after the engagement.
Branagan is commemorated by a Medal of Honor marker at Fort Concho National Historic Landmark in San Angelo, Texas. That marker preserves his connection to the cavalry history of the region. It is a memorial marker rather than a confirmed burial location.
