Edward Johnston (Medal of Honor)

He showed gallantry in the fighting at Cedar Creek, Montana.

Edward Johnston was born in New York on 8 February 1844. He served in Company C, 5th U.S. Infantry, holding the rank of corporal during his Medal of Honor action and later reaching sergeant.

His award recognized gallantry in fighting associated with Cedar Creek, Montana, on 21 October 1876. The official citation states simply, “Gallantry in action.”

On 18 July 1877, General William T. Sherman presented Johnston's medal at a parade at the cantonment near the Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers in Montana Territory. His award was accredited to Chicago, Illinois.

Johnston died on 20 January 1920 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan, New York. The Medal of Honor and his cemetery memorial preserve his place among the infantry soldiers recognized for courage during the Army's western campaigns.
