Chief watertender, U.S. Navy
Emil Fredericksen (also spelled Fredreksen) was a United States Navy sailor who served during the early 20th century. Born in 1867, he achieved the rank of Chief Watertender. He is best known for his heroic actions following a catastrophic boiler explosion aboard the gunboat USS Bennington (PG-4) in July 1905.
During the disaster, which occurred while the ship was in San Diego, California, Fredericksen demonstrated extraordinary heroism by risking his life to rescue injured shipmates from the hazardous, steam-filled compartments of the vessel. His selfless bravery during this peacetime tragedy saved lives and prevented further loss among the crew.
For his exceptional courage under hazardous conditions, Fredericksen was awarded the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. He lived until 1950, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated naval service and heroism.
