Sergeant, Canadian Army
Ernest Alvia "Smokey" Smith was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His most notable actions took place on the night of 21–22 October 1944 at the Savio River in Northern Italy, which earned him the Victoria Cross. He was the last living Canadian recipient of this decoration.
Throughout his military career and post-war life, Smith was widely recognized for his service and contributions. He was appointed as a Member of both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. His wartime service was also commemorated with campaign medals including the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the War Medal.
In addition to his wartime decorations, Smith received several commemorative medals, including the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal, the Canadian Centennial Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. He was also awarded the Canadian Forces' Decoration for his twelve years of service.
