At Cosby's Creek, Tennessee, Sergeant Everett W. Anderson accomplished an extraordinary capture: he took Confederate Brigadier General Robert B. Vance prisoner single-handedly.
Anderson was born on July 12, 1839, near Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War he served in Company M, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
On January 14, 1864, during a Union pursuit, Anderson intercepted Confederate troops and captured General Vance. CMOHS records the feat as a single-handed capture during a charge.

The Medal of Honor was presented on December 3, 1894. Anderson later attained the rank of second lieutenant. He died on February 4, 1917, and was buried in Morris Cemetery at Phoenixville.
