First Sergeant, U.S. Army
Francis Oliver was an American soldier who served in the United States Army during the late 19th century. As a member of the 1st U.S. Cavalry, Oliver served on the American frontier during the Indian Wars, a series of conflicts marked by frequent skirmishes with Native American tribes.
On October 20, 1869, Oliver distinguished himself during an engagement against the Apache Indians in the Chiricahua Mountains. This battle, later referred to as the "Campaign of the Rocky Mesa," saw Oliver perform with notable gallantry under fire.
In recognition of his actions during the battle, First Sergeant Oliver was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. He was one of thirty-two men to receive the medal for their bravery during this specific engagement.
