Frank Elmer Smith

He served through the China relief battles under enemy fire.

Frank Elmer Smith was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 22 August 1864. He served in the U.S. Navy as an oiler aboard USS Newark.

During the Allied relief expedition in China in June 1900, Smith distinguished himself in the presence of the enemy. His Medal of Honor citation recognized his conduct during battles on 13, 20, 21 and 22 June in the Boxer Rebellion.

The award was accredited to Virginia. Smith later reached the rating of chief watertender.

He died in Boston on 4 March 1943 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery there. His citation preserves his recognition for service during the China Relief Expedition.
