Company Sergeant Major, British Army
Captain Frederick Barter VC MC was a British Army officer and a Welsh recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in Cardiff, Wales, he served with distinction during the First World War in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, eventually attaining the rank of Captain.
Barter's exceptional bravery on the battlefield earned him the Victoria Cross for his actions on May 16, 1915, during the Battle of Festubert. While serving as a Company Sergeant Major, he led a small bombing party of volunteers that cleared several hundred yards of enemy trenches, capturing many prisoners and securing a vital position under heavy fire.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, Captain Barter was decorated with the Military Cross for his continued gallantry and leadership later in the war. He was also honored by the Russian Empire with the Cross of St. George, reflecting his international recognition as a highly decorated combat leader of the Great War.
