Biography

A Swedish cavalryman earned distinction on the Staked Plains

Frederick Bergendahl was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 26 February 1858. He served as a private in the band of the 4th U.S. Cavalry.

On 8 December 1874, on the Staked Plains of Texas, Bergendahl distinguished himself during a prolonged pursuit. His Medal of Honor citation recognized gallantry during that action.

He received the medal on 13 October 1875, with his award accredited to Boston, Massachusetts. Bergendahl later reached the rank of sergeant.

He died in Gothenburg on 15 December 1889. His citation preserves his recognition for courage during the Army's western campaigns.
