Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, was one of the most successful and prominent British military commanders of the Victorian era. Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, his military career began with the East India Company Army. He served with distinction as a young officer during the Indian Rebellion, where his gallantry in action earned him the prestigious Victoria Cross.
