George Butts

Gunner's Mate George Butts was an American sailor who served in the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He is best known for his heroic actions during the Red River Campaign in 1864.

On May 6, 1864, Butts was stationed aboard the USS Signal. During an engagement in the Red River Campaign, he displayed exceptional bravery under fire, which later earned him the nation's highest military decoration.

For his gallantry during this combat action, George Butts was presented with the Medal of Honor on December 31, 1864, cementing his legacy as a naval hero of the Civil War.
