Major, U.S. Army
George E. Wahlen was a highly decorated United States Army officer who originally served during World War II as a United States Navy hospital corpsman. While attached to a Marine Corps rifle company, he displayed extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration for valor.
Following his World War II navy service, Wahlen transitioned to the United States Army, where he served as an officer. His military career spanned three major conflicts, as he subsequently served during the Korean War and was wounded in action while serving in the Vietnam War.
His legacy of service is honored through numerous facilities named in his honor. In 2004, a special act of Congress allowed the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City to be named after him while he was still living. Additionally, a veterans' nursing home in Ogden, Utah, and a city park in Roy, Utah, bear his name.
