Captain, Canadian Army
George Fraser Kerr was a highly decorated Canadian soldier who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Demonstrating exceptional bravery on the battlefield, he rose to the rank of Captain and became one of the few soldiers to receive multiple high-level decorations for gallantry, culminating in the British Empire's highest military honor.
Throughout his service in the conflict, Kerr was repeatedly recognized for his actions in the face of the enemy. Before receiving his highest honor, he was awarded both the Military Medal and the Military Cross, with a subsequent Bar to the Military Cross representing a second award of the decoration. His actions typified the courage of the Canadian corps during the war's most intense campaigns.
Kerr was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery during the final months of the war. Today, his remarkable legacy is preserved at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, where his medals are displayed, and he is honored with multiple memorials in Ontario, including in his hometown of Deseronto.
