Farrier, British Army
George Hollis VC was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He served as a Farrier in the British Army. A notable historical anecdote involves his lost Victoria Cross medal, which was presumed lost during training on horseback at the Curragh in County Kildare, Ireland, where his regiment, the 8th Hussars, was based between 1869 and 1875.
The medal was eventually recovered in 1994 when a bystander spotted a small piece of metal being kicked up by a galloping horse, which was later identified as a Victoria Cross (minus its bar) likely belonging to Hollis.
