Corporal, U.S. Army
George W. Thompkins, also known as George W. Tompkins, was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War who served as a corporal in Company F of the 124th New York Infantry. He is most remembered for his courageous actions during the Battle of Fort Stedman in Petersburg, Virginia, on March 25, 1865.
During the battle, Thompkins demonstrated extraordinary heroism by capturing the battle flag of the Confederate States of America's 49th Alabama Infantry. He took the colors directly from a Confederate officer who was attempting to rally his men. This act of bravery was recognized quickly by the military command.
For his actions, Thompkins was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 6, 1865. He was one of five soldiers from the 124th New York Infantry to receive the nation's highest military decoration for valor during the Civil War, and one of only two in his regiment to receive it specifically for capturing an enemy battle flag.
