Colonel Gordon Johnston was a highly decorated United States Army officer, athlete, and coach. A Princeton University graduate, Johnston played tackle for the university's football team and went on to serve as the head coach of the University of North Carolina football team in 1896. He began his distinguished military career shortly thereafter, serving in multiple conflicts around the turn of the century and into the first World War.
Throughout his military service, Johnston participated in the Spanish–American War, the Philippine–American War, and World War I. He received the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his gallantry during the Philippine–American War. His leadership and bravery on the battlefield earned him numerous other high-ranking decorations from both the United States and international allies.
