Hans A. Hansen

Served with the Allied relief expedition under fire in China

Hans Anton Hansen was born on April 16, 1872, in Germany. He served as a seaman in the United States Navy aboard USS Newark during the China Relief Expedition.

His Medal of Honor citation recognized his conduct with the Allied relief forces on June 13, 20, 21 and 22, 1900. Hansen distinguished himself in the presence of the enemy during these operations, carried out amid the Boxer Rebellion. The award honored his meritorious service during the expedition.

Hansen survived the campaign and received the Medal of Honor. He died on August 23, 1949, in Toms River, New Jersey, and is buried at Riverside Cemetery there. His award preserves the memory of a Navy seaman's distinguished conduct during service in China.
