Harold Arthur Furlong was a United States Army officer who served during World War I. While serving as a First Lieutenant with the 353rd Infantry, 89th Division, Furlong demonstrated extraordinary heroism in action near Bois-de-Bantheville, France, on November 1, 1918. His exceptional courage and leadership in the face of intense enemy fire earned him the United States military's highest decoration.
For his gallantry in action, Furlong was awarded the Medal of Honor. In addition to this prestigious American decoration, his valor was recognized by the French government, which awarded him the Croix de guerre with palms and appointed him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
