Sergeant, British Army
Sergeant Harold Jackson VC was a British Army soldier and an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in March 1918 during the German spring offensive of the First World War. His conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty was marked during a period of intense combat operations.
Tragically, Sergeant Jackson was killed in action five months after his heroic deeds. His medals, including his Victoria Cross, were preserved by his family for decades before eventually being sold to a private collector in 1989.
