Lieutenant colonel, U.S. Marine Corps
Lieutenant Colonel Harold William "Joe" Bauer was a prominent United States Marine Corps air group commander, fighter pilot, and flying ace during World War II. He was credited with destroying 11 Japanese aircraft in aerial combat. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism and leadership as a fighter squadron commander during the critical struggle for control of the Solomon Islands during the Battle of Guadalcanal.
Bauer's exceptional leadership and daring actions at Guadalcanal made him a legendary figure in Marine Corps aviation. During his deployment, he repeatedly engaged enemy forces despite overwhelming odds, leading his squadron by example and contributing significantly to the defense of Henderson Field. His final combat action occurred on November 14, 1942, when he was shot down after shooting down another enemy bomber.
For his conspicuous gallantry, Lieutenant Colonel Bauer received the nation's highest military decoration alongside the Purple Heart, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, and multiple campaign medals. His legacy of courage and dedication remains a benchmark for Marine Corps aviators.
