Coxswain, U.S. Navy
Harry Delmar Fadden was a sailor in the United States Navy who received the United States military's highest award for bravery, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in saving a crewmate from drowning. While serving on a training cruise off the coast of California aboard the USS Adams on June 30, 1903, Fadden witnessed a fellow crewmate, Landsman O.C. Hawthorne, fall unconscious into shark-infested waters.
Fadden immediately leaped into the ocean to rescue the unconscious sailor. He swam to Hawthorne, kept his head above water, and secured him until the USS Adams was able to turn back and rescue both men. For his prompt and heroic action in saving a life, Fadden was awarded the Medal of Honor one month later on July 31, 1903.
