Harry Greenwood

“Some heroes are remembered for a single moment of courage; others for a lifetime of relentless bravery.” Harry Greenwood belonged firmly to the latter. A soldier whose career spanned the Boer War, the First World War, and the Second World War, Greenwood earned some of the British Empire’s highest honours through repeated acts of leadership and gallantry.

Born in 1881, Greenwood began his military career during the Second Boer War, where he served in South Africa and earned both the Queen’s South Africa Medal and King’s South Africa Medal with campaign clasps—early evidence of a man destined for distinguished service. But it was during the First World War that his reputation for battlefield courage truly emerged.

During the brutal trench warfare of the Western Front, Greenwood displayed exceptional composure under fire. His repeated acts of courage and command earned him the Military Cross and later the Distinguished Service Order with Bar, recognizing not just bravery but sustained leadership in combat. His finest hour came during actions of extraordinary gallantry that earned him the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for valour in the face of the enemy. The decoration placed him among a rare class of soldiers whose courage became part of military history itself.

Yet Greenwood’s story did not end with one war. Like many officers of his generation, he returned to service during the Second World War, once again answering the call of duty. His continued service to Britain was recognized with appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), reflecting his contribution beyond frontline combat.
