Biography
He showed gallantry in the Red River cavalry action in Texas
Henry A. McMasters was born in 1845 in Augusta, Maine. He served as a corporal in Company A, 4th U.S. Cavalry, during the Army's western campaigns.
On September 29, 1872, at the Red River in Texas, McMasters distinguished himself in action. His Medal of Honor citation recognized his gallantry during that engagement.
McMasters died on November 11, 1872, at Fort Griffin, Texas. His Medal of Honor was awarded posthumously, with the presentation date recorded as November 19, 1872. He is buried at San Antonio National Cemetery. The award preserves the memory of his recognized courage during cavalry service.
