2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army
Henry M. Fox was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War who served as a Sergeant in Company M of the 5th Michigan Cavalry. He is recognized as a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Third Battle of Winchester in Virginia.
On September 19, 1864, during the intense fighting at Winchester, Sergeant Fox demonstrated extraordinary heroism by capturing a Confederate battle flag. His bravery was quickly recognized by his command, leading to the prompt issuance of his decoration just over a week later.
Following his distinguished service, Fox was later promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was one of only two members of his regiment, alongside Corporal Gabriel Cole, to be awarded the Medal of Honor for valor shown during this specific Civil War engagement.
