Landsman, U.S. Navy
Henry Peter Russell was a landsman serving in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the cable-cutting operation at Cienfuegos, Cuba, on 11 May 1898.
Serving on board the USS Marblehead, Russell faced heavy enemy fire while performing the hazardous task of cutting the underwater cables. He displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout the action, earning the nation's highest military decoration.
Russell was born in Quebec, Canada, on 10 June 1878, and his service was accredited to New York. In addition to the Medal of Honor, his service in the Spanish-American War and subsequent naval operations were recognized with the Sampson Medal, Spanish Campaign Medal, Philippine Campaign Medal, and World War I Victory Medal.
